MANUFACTURING POEMS

In her collection, Hands of Clay, poet Marcia Marques-Rambourg manufactures poems. Yes, manufactures, as when objects are created with various materials-soil, leaves, flesh, memories, water and many others. These objects weigh almost nothing-the weight of a sheet of paper and some ink-yet their weight is considerable: it is the weight of the body, heart, memory, death and love. These poems are the fundamental objects of speaking, transmitting, of sharing. They are written in two languages-French and English-that both split and reconcile meaning. Marcia Marques Rambourg actually has hands of clay that shape the language as God fashioned man-in her image, and giving them full freedom.

Hands of Clay is her fifth book of poetry and the first to include poems in both French and English.
